ISO 17100
ISO 17100 is an international standard, published in 2015 to provide the requirements that a TSP (Translation Services Provider) shall meet, in order to provide a translation service that meets client’s and other applicable specifications.

The ISO 17100 standard uses a structure of 6 clauses, which roughly grouped together, cover 4 key areas:

Resources – Defines the responsibilities and competency requirements for translators, revisers and project managers.
Pre-Production – Specifies the requirements for quoting and entering into an agreement.
Production – Ensures the appropriate workflow is defined and managed, and customer needs are met.
Post-Production – Requires that the TSP validates customer requirements have been met and takes action to correct deficiencies if applicable.

ISO 18841. Quality Interpreting Services.
ISO 18841 is an international standard providing the basic requirements for interpreting services, with additional recommendations for best practices. One of a number of interpreting standards, ISO 18841 can be used by language service providers to demonstrate a commitment to provide a high quality interpreting service. The standard includes the definition of basic interpreting principles, basic conditions governing interpreting assignments and the competencies & qualifications of interpreters, as well as three informative annexes.

ISO 18587. Translation services. Post-editing of machine translation output.
ISO 18587 is an international standard that provides the requirements against which claims of conformity can be made for full post editing of machine translation output and an annex that describes a light post editing of machine translation output service.

It provides requirements for the process of full, human post-editing of machine translation output and post-editors’ competences.

WHAT DOES ISO 17100 COVER?
ISO 17100 Translation Services consists of just six clauses with the four key clauses being:
  • Human Resources: ensuring the people selected to perform translation tasks have the required competences and qualifications.
  • Pre-Production Process and Activities: ensuring processes are in place for handling and analysing enquiries, determining project feasibility, preparing quotations, and entering into agreements.
  • Production Processes: ensuring compliance with the agreement from the moment it is confirmed to the agreed end of the project.
  • Post-Production Process: ensuring processes are in place for handling client feedback, assessing client satisfaction and making appropriate corrections and/or taking corrective action.
WHAT ARE THE NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS FOR A COMPANY TO ACQUIRE A CERTIFICATE?
In order to obtain a certification from Baltum Bureau, a company must demonstrate compliance with the relevant international standard(s) through a formal audit process.

The exact requirements and processes for certification will vary depending on the standard being certified to, but generally, the company will need to:

- Develop and implement a management system that meets the requirements of the standard being certified to.

- Conduct an internal audit to ensure the management system is effectively implemented and identify any areas for improvement. 

- Engage an accredited certification body, such as Baltum Bureau, to conduct an external audit of the management system to verify compliance with the standard requirements.

- Address any non-conformities identified during the external audit and implement any corrective actions as necessary.

- Maintain the management system and undergo annual surveillance audits to maintain certification.
