Certification Requirements for Data Centres
Enterprise and regulated-industry clients require their data centre and cloud providers to hold formal independent certifications as a condition of tenancy, contract, and regulatory approval. ISO 27001 and ISO 22301 are the minimum baseline for European and global enterprise procurement; SOC 2 Type II is additionally required for US clients and financial services operators.
Core Certifications for Data Centres
- ISO/IEC 27001 — Covers physical security, environmental controls, access management, CCTV, and operational security processes for both the facility and hosted services.
- ISO 22301 — Business Continuity Management; demonstrating redundant power, cooling, connectivity, and documented DR capabilities — critical for uptime SLAs and force majeure contract clauses.
- ISO/IEC 20000-1 — IT Service Management; relevant for managed hosting, managed cloud, and colocation operators with service desk and incident management obligations.
- SOC 2 Type II — Required by US enterprise clients and financial services firms co-locating regulated workloads.
Physical Security and ISO 27001
ISO 27001 Annex A Section 7 (Physical Controls) addresses perimeter security, access control, equipment protection, clear desk/screen policies, and asset disposal — directly relevant to data centre operations.
